Pokemon Go Arrives For Apple Watch Bringing Snorlax Hunting To Your Wrist

Are you tired of wrenching your phone from the deep recesses of your purse or pocket and waiting 20 seconds to a minute for Pokémon GO to load? Do you hate having your phone app open just to hatch a silly Pidgey? Apple has your back, because Pokémon GO is now available on Apple Watch.

According to Niantic, “Apple Watch is particularly well suited to Pokémon GO as it seamlessly combines game play and imagination with getting exercise and exploring the real world...And hey, what great timing—you can get a head start on that New Year’s fitness resolution by having some fun now!”

Apple Watch Pokémon trainers can receive notifications about nearby Pokémon and PokéStops, be pinged when their eggs hatch or they receive a medal, and count distance toward hatching Pokémon Eggs and receiving Candy with their Buddy Pokémon. Trainers can even log their play sessions through the Apple Watch app as a Workout and count those sessions toward their Activity ring. Players will still need their phone, however, to actually catch Pokémon.

The Apple Watch release comes shortly after a number of app updates. These include a new tracking system, the ability to hatch Pokémon from Gold and Silver games, and the addition of Ditto. Niantic recently partnered with Starbucks to make the coffee shops Gyms. You can even order a special Pokémon GO themed Frappuccino.

Although 600 million users have walked 8.7 billion kilometers to capture 88 billion Pokémon, many of these players have stopped playing since the game’s release this past summer. Niantic has used an in-game Halloween event, daily bonuses, and a Christmas-themed Pikachu to lure them back. Pokémon GO fans, however, have been clamoring for more rural PokéStops, more legendary Pokémon (e.g. Mew and MewTwo), and real-life “battles”. Who knows what the hit game has in store for 2017...
