OnePlus Gives Away 30,000 Loop VR Headsets To Celebrate June OnePlus 3 Launch

OnePlus is looking to make a splash in the flagship smartphone market next month with the launch of its OnePlus 3. But before those festivities kick off, the company today announced a swanky promotion in which it is giving away 30,000 Loop VR headsets for free (plus $5 shipping). Unfortunately, those 30,000 slots were wrestled away quickly, but we’re still impressed that OnePlus decided to initiate such a large (and likely expensive) giveaway.

If this all sounds familiar, it’s because OnePlus did something similar last year ahead of the OnePlus 2 launch. At that time, the company gave away 30,000 Google Cardboard VR Viewers so that folks could watch the OnePlus 2 unveil live in virtual reality. This new promotion is similar in scope, as the OnePlus 3 will also be revealed in virtual reality; but this stunt will cost OnePlus a lot more than 30,000 sheets of cardboard coupled with some rubber bands and plastic lenses.

The OnePlus Loop, which was designed in collaboration with AntVR, measures 188 × 120 × 100 mm, offers a 100-degree field of view, incorporates orthoscopic lenses, weighs 366 grams and is compatible with most 5-inch to 6-inch smartphones. You will not only be able to watch the OnePlus 3 launch on VR with the headset, but OnePlus Loop owners will be the very first allowed to order the smartphone.

“We’re extremely excited about the OnePlus 3, but it’s important to remember that without you, we wouldn’t have made it this far,” said OnePlus co-founder Carl Pei. “Instead of speaking to a few members of the press, to be able to bring all of you together at the same time, and same place. This is just as much your launch as it is ours. We can’t wait to see what’s next, so let’s find out - together.”

As for the OnePlus 3, we don’t have any concrete details on the smartphone yet. Supposed images of the smartphone “leaked” last week, but many are saying that they were simply decoys. Rumored specs for the OnePlus 3 include a Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor, 6GB of RAM, an AMOLED display and a 3000 mAh battery.
