Nokia Imaging Chief Dinning Moving On, Nokia Loses a Big Fish
Damian Dinning, the lead program manager for Imaging Experience at Nokia, has left the company. Reportedly, Nokia took the loss pretty hard, and it’s not hard to see why: under Dinning’s watch, Nokia developed the impressive PureView smartphone camera, and he reportedly helped create a relationship with Microsoft over its Windows Phone imaging technology. As Nokia is all-in with the Windows Phone platform, that relationship is central in some respects to Nokia’s survival (or should we say “thrival”) strategy.
According to Amateur Photographer, which obtained a statement from Nokia UK, Dinning left for personal reasons. In part, the release says, “Following the relocation of key strategic roles to Finland, and with great reluctance, Damian Dinning has made a personal decision to leave the company effective 30 November 2012.”

In an intensely competitive mobile market, Nokia needs all the help it can get; losing a key technology contributor like Dinning surely isn’t helping.
It’s unclear who will take over Dinning’s role, and other than a Tweet saying that “I'm incredibly excited about the 10th Dec, can't say more than that right now other than to say it's nothing to do with Nokia directly”, Dinning hasn’t publicly stated what he’s doing next.
Reading into the tone of his Tweet, it’s reasonable to assume that there wasn’t a nasty breakup. By saying that his next venture isn’t directly related to Nokia, we can infer that it may be indirectly related.
Perhaps there’s an opening for him at Microsoft, the company with which he apparently forged a good working relationship. After Steve Sinofsky’s departure, there will no doubt be shakeups up and down the management tree.
