Nokia Astound Brings More Symbian To T-Mobile USA

It's a very interesting time for Nokia. They brought in a Microsoft exec to be their CEO, and then they switched operating systems to Windows Phone 7. But there's still a few Nokia phones that were already in the pipeline, and you can't just cancel all of those as you wait for the WP7 integration to take place over the course of the year. So, that leaves Nokia with little choice but to ship existing Symbian-based smartphones in the meanwhile, even though consumers know that WP7 will be the supported OS on Nokia phones in a matter of months.

Nokia's Astound is one of those phones that are caught up in the middle, being based on Symbian and attempting to appeal to consumers who have already turned Symbian off in their heads. The phone is slated to ship on T-Mobile USA starting April 6th, offering an 8MP camera (with dual-LED flash), a 720p HD video camera, 3.5" capacitive touch screen (AMOLED), free turn-by-turn navigation, and free/paid apps via Nokia's Ovi Store.

The silver lining here is that it's a really solid phone, and quite stylish as well. And rather than pricing it for the standard $200 on contract, Nokia's making this one really affordable right away: it'll sell for $79.99 after a $50 mail-in rebate card with a two-year service agreement and qualifying voice and data plan, making it one of the more affordable new-smartphones on the market. Still tough to say if it's worth investing in what's effectively a dead smartphone OS at this point, but you have until the 6th to decide.
