Next-Gen ATM Machines to Use Facial Recognition for Security
Tomorrow's ATMs will sport tablet-like touchscreens, only unlike your iPad or Nexus 7, it will spit out money (assuming you have some in your bank account). It might also use facial recognition as an added measure of security, so if your card and PIN are lost and/or stolen, the perpertrator won't be able to wreak havoc on your bank account.
Expect mobile to play a role, too. Specifically, QR codes will be another way of identifying users. These technologies aren't just to protect against lost or stolen cards, they'll function as alternative ways of authenticating your identity without having to whip out your debit card in the first place.
As demonstrated by Diebold at the ATM conference in London (yes, such a thing exists), when a user scans an onscreen QR code, the device is synched through a cloud-based service to confirm the user's identity, Daily Mail reports. The transaction screen is beamed to the smartphone, allowing the user to withdraw cash or even send money to a third person. Receipts are sent via text message or email.
Diebold says it hopes to bring the first batch of next-gen ATMs to market within the next 18 months.
