Microsoft to Offer XP -> 7 Upgrades
However, the upgrade will really only apply to pricing; there won't be a way to do an in-place install of Windows 7 over Windows XP. Instead, the end user will have to do a fresh install of Windows 7.
In an email, a company spokeswoman said:
"Regarding XP, customers can purchase upgrade media and an upgrade license to move from Windows XP to Windows 7. However, they will need to do a clean installation of Windows 7."It's unclear what the pricing would be for such an upgrade. It would definitely be more expensive than an upgrade from Windows Vista.
Personally, we don't care about the lack of an in-place upgrade option. For something like this, wiping the hard drive and starting from scratch, despite the "pain," is a far better option.
