Microsoft Enhances Skype With Screen Sharing Option On Android and iOS
Microsoft has completed beta testing of its screen sharing feature of Skype on mobile devices, and is now rolling it out to Android and iOS users at large. That is good news for anyone that uses Skype on a smartphone (or tablet), and depending on the need for such a feature, it could entice non-Skype users to give Microsoft's video and chat application a whirl.
The screen sharing feature that is rolling out to mobile is the same one that was already being enjoyed by desktop users. Microsoft started beta testing screen sharing on Android and iOS just a couple of months ago, and is apparently pleased with the results.
"Whether you have a last-minute meeting on the go, or your dad doesn’t know how to use his phone—screen sharing on Android and iOS lets you get it done from anywhere. Maybe you want to shop online with your best friends, or you need to collaborate with someone on the other side of the world from the comfort of your couch—no need to drag out the laptop! Simply start a Skype call, tap the brand new '…' menu, and start sharing your screen," Microsoft explains.
The screen sharing feature is supported on mobile devices running Android 6.0 and above, or iOS 12 and above. Users will also need to download the latest version of Skype. Once they have updated Skype, they can use the feature to share PowerPoint presentations with a co-worker or hit the online shopping scene with a friend or family member, to give a couple of examples.
Adding this feature brings a level of parity between Skype and apps like Cisco WebEx and Zoom, both of which had previously added screen sharing to mobile. In addition, Microsoft redesigned Skype's mobile calling to make it more streamlined, and to simplify video chats.
"A single tap will dismiss the call controls and let you fully experience the most essential Skype feature—a video call without any obstructions. Want to make it even cleaner? Try a double tap to remove it all. A single tap brings all the controls back, with everything you need the most at the front and center," Microsoft says.
