MediaTek Targets Gaming Smartphone Market With Helios G90 SoC
MediaTek has announced its latest SoCs for mobile devices, and it is aimed squarely at the gaming smartphone market. The new chipsets both fall into the G series and include the Helio G90 and the G90T. The company says that when these chips are paired with its HyperEngine technology, the entire smartphone is tuned for the best gameplay experience.
G90 series SoCs combine the latest CPU and GPU cores with ultra-fast memory and improved AI performance for fast and fluid gaming action. MediaTek says that the mobile gaming market is growing quickly and its G90 series will help deliver the best gaming experience to users.
Both the G90 series chips are octa-core units with Arm Cortex-A76 and Cortex-A55s paired up with an Arm Mali G76 GPU clocked at up to 800 MHz. MediaTek says that its combination of CPU, GPU, and APU delivers up to 1TMACs performance. That level of performance means less lag for smoother gaming on the go and a fast and responsive display.
G90 chipsets support up to a 64MP single camera and multi-camera combinations. The chipset can deliver smooth real-time previews and promises impressive low light picture quality via a night shot mode using quad pixel technology. Fast AI facial detection is supported, and the chipset can accelerate AI camera applications.
Tech in the HyperEngine that is aimed specifically at mobile gamers includes support for dual Wi-Fi connections allowing connectivity to a router via both 2.4GHz and 5 GHz bands at once or to two Wi-Fi routers at once. The chipset's networking engine can switch between Wi-Fi and LTE networks in milliseconds to keep games lag-free as gamers move around. Calls and data connectivity are supported concurrently, so a data connection isn't dropped if a phone call is received. MediaTek hasn't announced any devices using the chipsets at this time. MediaTek announced a 5G SoC back in May.
