LG Begins Mass Producing Flexible OLED Displays For Smartphones, Samsung May Get To Market First
“LG Display is launching a new era of flexible displays for smartphones with its industry-leading technology. The flexible display market is expected to grow quickly as this technology is expected to expand further into diverse applications including automotive displays, tablets and wearable devices,” said Dr. Sang Deog Yeo, Executive Vice President and Chief Technology Officer of LG Display in a press release.

He also stated that LG is planning to launch new products next year with “enhanced performance and differentiated designs”, which presumably includes phones utilizing the flexible displays.
LG’s OLED panel is just 0.44mm thick and weighs 7.2g (for a 6-inch panel) with a radius of 700mm. The panel is built with plastic substrates instead of glass, and it uses film-type encapsulation technology with the protection film affixed to the back of the panel.

Samsung, however, may beat LG to market with a curved-display device. According to a Korean news site, Samsung could unveil the Galaxy Round, a device similar to the Galaxy S 3 but with a flexible display, as early as next week. Bear in mind that LG’s announcement is an official company press release while the Samsung bit is just a rumor, but if the latter is true, we’ll find out soon enough.
