LaCie Partners With Philippe Starck For Stunning New HDD Line

For the longest time, LaCie has looked to Neil Poulton to provide design inspiration for the company's stylish line of hard drives, external media burners and USB drives. Now, the company is branching its design efforts out once more thanks to a partnership with Philippe Starck. It's tough to say why snazzy storage is attractive; after all, it's just a hard drive/DVD burner. But there's no denying that a LaCie product looks good, and if you're going to have something sitting atop your IKEA desk, it might as well fit the part.

Announced today, the LaCie Starck Desktop Hard Drive is a bold, brawny looking HDD that will be available in 1TB and 2TB capacities. The equally beefy LaCie Starck Mobile Drive will ship in a smaller form factor with 320GB and 500GB HDDs within. Exclusively featured on the LaCie Starck Desktop Hard Drive, you can customize the touch-sensitive surface to open an application of your choosing with the touch of a finger, which is certainly a first as far as external drives go. Both drives are sheathed in aluminum, and LaCie contends that they'll be super durable in use (as if you'd treat something that looks this good with disregard).

The smaller of the two also sports a built-in USB cable, with both units supporting Mac and PC connections via USB 2.0. Both drives are available now starting at $129.99 (Desktop) and $99.99 (Mobile), and you can hit play here to get a better feel of the products from the designer himself.
