Reports indicate Amazon is working on a new version of its Kindle e-book reader that will have a larger screen. According to sources who say they have seen versions of the device, the new Kindle could make its debut before this year’s holiday shopping season.
By offering a Kindle e-book reader with a larger screen,
Amazon would be better positioned to compete for the business of newspaper and
magazine publishers who are searching for new distribution platforms for their
digital content. Amazon currently offers subscriptions to newspapers and magazines
such as the USA Today and Newsweek. Content from these sources is reformatted
to fit the Kindle’s current screen which is about the size of a paperback
Competition in the e-book space is increasing. So far, Amazon’s Kindle and Sony’s Reader have dominated the space, but many other companies are actively working on products to enter the market. In fact, Hearst Corp. and News Corp. have indicated they are working on e-reader hardware. News Corp. owns Dow Jones & Co. who publishes of The Wall Street Journal. There have also been plenty of rumors lately that indicate Barnes & Noble is working with a device vendor and Sprint to create an e-book reader. AT&T has also been mentioned as a possible partner in this venture.
