iPhone Duo Teardown Exposes Hidden Flaws In Folding Screen Hinge

Apple's first foldable iPhone is already facing questions about its durability, with some owners reporting cracked inner displays and bright lines appearing along the fold. Now, a teardown by the DIY repair specialists at iFixit offers a closer look at what might be going wrong, pointing to potential trouble inside the iPhone Duo's complicated hinge mechanism.

In the teardown, the site reminisces about Samsung's original Galaxy Fold that reviewers promptly (and inadvertently) killed by peeling off what looked like a screen protector, but was actually a part of the display. Apple avoided that mistake—as it should have, given how much the foldable scene has evolved since then—but one thing it couldn't avoid was a visible crease, no matter how well it's disguised.

"Don’t get us wrong. The Duo’s inner display looks remarkably smooth. Its hinge and supporting layers help it open flat, while the matte nano-texture finish scatters reflections across the surface, further concealing any evidence of a crease," iFixit states.

Apple's trick is to employ a nano-texture layer to diffuse and scatter light that reflects off the screen, which helps hide the crease, but it's still there if you look close enough. At this point, a visible crease no matter how minor appears to be an unavoidable trait of the folding form factor.

What's of more concern for users plunking down two grand or more is durability. The teardown doesn't establish a definitive cause for the reported failures, but it identifies a possible stress point where the display bends over the hinge's central support section. The site also found that fine particles can make their way into the moving parts despite the phone's IP68 rating for dust and water resistance.

To investigate the screen failures, iFixit built a 3D model of the iPhone Duo's hinge using teardown footage, patent documents, and CT scans. The team then compared the model with photographs of damaged displays shared by owners.

The reported damage appears to cluster near the transition between the opening that accommodates a flexible display cable and the hinge's central support. In one simulation, the site found that the center support bar might not drop far enough as the phone closes. If that happens, the folding portion of the display could press against the bar, creating a concentrated stress point.

Additionally, the site exposed the iPhone Duo to fine fluorescent powder and tracked where particles traveled inside the foldable. Although most of the powder was stopped by adhesive barriers, some reached the hinge's moving components. The team subsequently heard a crunching sound from the mechanism.

These are still just theories, and the site readily acknowledges that the "damage probably isn't as big as the footprint," meaning a relatively small number of iPhone Duo devices are experiencing failures. Still, it remains a concern, especially given the potentially high cost of out-of-warranty repairs without an AppleCare+ plan.

All that said, the iPhone Duo achieved a 5/10 Repairability score. While that's middling, it's also the highest score the site has ever given to a foldable.
