HP Recalls Additional Batteries Due To Fire Hazard

HP is extending its worldwide recall program for batteries in certain laptops due to a potential to overhead and pose a fire hazard. The original laptop battery recall program was announced on May 14 of last year and updated in October. Now, HP is adding additional battery models to the recall. The batteries that are being recalled are used in more than 30 models worldwide in Compaq Presario, Pavilion, HP, and HP Compaq notebooks.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission advises users to remove the recalled battery from their notebook and contact HP to determine if the battery is included in the recall and to request a free replacement battery. Thus far, HP and CPSC are aware of two incidents where the batteries overheated and ruptured, resulting in flames and fire that caused minor property damage. Thus far, no injuries have been reported.

Laptops manufactured between August 2007 and May 2008 may have shipped with the battery packs. HP believes less than 3% of the laptops contained the affected battery packs.
