HP Pre 3 Announced: WebOS 2.2 Smartphone With 1.4GHz Snapdragon

Palm just had their biggest day in years, and they're not even Palm any longer. When HP purchased Palm, many feared that it meant the end for the Palm brand. The URL stuck around, and rumors were swirling all along that maybe it actually would hang on in some form or another. But now, it's pretty clear that the Palm we've known and loved since the early 1990s no longer lives.

Even Palm's webOS and Synergy systems are now officially known as "HP WebOS and HP Synergy," leaving little doubt that HP has said goodbye to Palm. That alone is a very interested topic of debate; Palm is a name that resonates with people in the mobile world, and HP…well, not so much. Now, HP is hoping to build up their own name like Apple and HTC, but we can't figure out why they wouldn't keep a good thing going with the Palm branding.

At any rate, HP is introducing the newest Pre today, following up on the original and the Pre 2. They aren't changing the naming convention, instead simply calling it the Pre 3. It's a simple name for a sophisticated phone. The specifications are pretty impressive, and they largely address the gripes that people had about the earlier Pre models. It has a 3.58" multi-touch display (800 x 480), a 1.4GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon MSM8x55 processor, a gesture area on the bottom, your choice of 8GB of 16GB of internal storage space, Flash Player 10.1, webOS 2.2, 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi, Integrated GPS / A-GPS, Bluetooth 2.1, a mobile hotspot option (supports five Wi-Fi devices), a 5MP camera and a 3.5mm headphone jack.

This is also one of the first HP smartphones to interact with the forthcoming HP TouchPad tablet through the Touchstone / Touch-to-share functionality. Other specs include a 1230mAh battery, proximity sensor, light sensor ringer switch and a front-facing VGA camera for video chatting. HP's not announcing a price or ship date yet, only saying that pricing will be determined at a later date and it will ship sometime this summer. Any guesses as to what carrier(s) will be picking it up?
