Holy Smokes, iPhone 4S Pre-Orders Top 1 Million in 24 Hours

If you're just now getting around to pre-ordering an iPhone 4S device, get ready for a dose of the backorder blues. Getting an iPhone 4S on day of delivery is going to be tough for anyone that hasn't already laid claim to Apple's next generation smartphone, which is only mildly surprising given the disappointment that Apple didn't announce an iPhone 5 device.

It doesn't matter, people are still lining up to buy the iPhone 4S. According to Apple, more than a million people flocked to its website and pre-ordered the device in the first 24 hours it was made available, far surpassing the previous record of 600,000 single-day pre-orders set by the original iPhone 4.

"We are blown away with the incredible customer response to iPhone 4S," said Philip Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing. "The first day pre-orders for iPhone 4S have been the most for any new product that Apple has ever launched and we are thrilled that customers love iPhone 4S as much as we do."

Apple is now estimating 1-2 weeks shipping for any new pre-orders. Here's how it shakes out by carrier:
  • Sprint: 16GB iPhone 4S sold out online
  • AT&T: Ships in 21-28 days
  • Verizon: Ships by October 21, 2011

Those who placed their pre-order early should still receive their iPhone 4S on October 14th. If you didn't, there's a still a chance you can snag one on the day of release by stopping by your local Apple Retail Store.
