Microsoft’s Windows 10 October 2018 update was a bit of a disaster. Although Microsoft's software developers have been working tirelessly on the upcoming April update, many users are skeptical. Here are a few way concerned PC users can delay Microsoft’s Windows 10 April update.
There are a few things to note before digging into the delay methods. First, these options are only available to Windows 10 Pro, Windows 10 Enterprise, Windows 10 Education, and other business or education editions of Windows 10 on PC. These options are not available to Windows Home users or those enrolled in the Windows Insider Program. Second, you will need to have already installed the October 2018 Update (version 1809) on your PC. Once your delay has run its course, the update will be installed without any further options for deferral.
Users will need to go into their settings and navigate to “Updates & Security”. You will then need to click on “Windows Update”. Once there, select “Advanced Options”. “Advanced Options” will provide you three ways to delay your update.
The first option involves changing one’s “Servicing Channel”. Once you have reached “Advanced Options”, you can change your servicing channel from “Semi-Annual Channel (Targeted)” to “Semi-Annual Channel”. The “Semi-Annual Channel (Targeted)” releases the update when it is ready for most users, but the “Semi-Annual Channel” delays the update until it is “ready for widespread use in organizations”. This option will allow users to avoid the usual bugs that plague a new update.
Second, you can delay your “feature update”. If you are incredibly concerned about the upcoming update, you can defer the update for up to 365 days. This feature is right under your servicing channel options. Last, users can also delay the monthly cumulative “quality updates” for up to thirty days. This feature is under the “feature update” option. This is not a large delay, but once again it helps users avoid the update’s first round of bugs.
Windows 10 19H1 (April 2019 Update) will likely be released in the next couple of weeks. The latest preview build included gaming improvements, installer updates, and Windows Defender Application Guard extensions for Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox.
