Google Pixel 4 XL Leak Highlights 90Hz Display, Robust Camera And Face Recognition
There has been yet another leak of Google's Pixel 4 family, this latest one focused on what appears to be an actual Pixel 4 XL handset. Assuming the leak is legitimate, we get a clear view of the upcoming phone, along with a meaty rundown of the specs, settings, and various features, including the triple-camera arrangement and face unlock function.
Google has not yet launched its Pixel 4 family, though that is expected to happen within the several weeks. In the meantime, a supposed Pixel 4 XL has been spotted in Vietnam. It's the white version with black trim. One of the things that immediately stands out to me is the square-shaped camera cutout. Like the iPhone 11 Pro, the Pixel 4 XL will wield three cameras, though to me, Google's design looks a bit cleaner.
This may seem like a minor thing, but interestingly enough, there have been reports of the iPhone 11 Pro's camera arrangement triggering incidents of trypophobia, a fear based on the sight of a cluster of small holes. Yes, it's probably way overblown, but I'd definitely like to see phone makers spend more time cleaning up their designs as they shove more camera sensors into their handsets.
One of the related features of the Pixel 4 family is a Night Sight model, which has been improved with speed enhancements and other general tweaks. We have also seen references to an Astrophotography Mode for snapping photos of stars.
The extensive leak in Vietnam seemingly confirms the Pixel 4 XL will have a display with a 90Hz refresh rate. Apparently the phone can automatically adjust between 60Hz and 90Hz based on the display content, to potentially save battery life. So if you're just checking your email, it should refresh at 60Hz, but kick up to 90Hz when playing a supported game.
We also get a look at the facial recognition feature that is similar to Face ID. According to the leak, there is actually a complex arrangement of hardware to make this work, including dual IR cameras on the front, along with a Soli radar chip and a few other bits.
Curiously, the site says it was unable to find the Motion Sense settings, nor could it enable the face unlock feature. That could be the result of the handset being a prototype (the final version might not have black accents on the white model, for example), and/or due to software restrictions prior to an actual launch.
Still, there is plenty to see in the leak (hit the link in the Via field below), from squeezing the edge to active the Google Assistant to new Pixel Themes.
As for the hardware, the model in the leak sports a Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 processor, 6GB of RAM, and 128GB of internal storage. It also features a 6.3-inch AMOLED display with a 3040x1440 resolution and a 3,700 mAh battery.
Google is expected to unveil the Pixel 4 family in mid-October.
