Boxee Bursts Into the Cloud with Cloudee Mobile App

If you're a fan of Boxee, go ahead and say 'howdy' to Cloudee, the set-top box maker's first foray into the world of cloud computing. For the time being, Cloudee is an invite-only cloud party for iPhone and iPod touch users who don't mind playing with beta apps. That stinks if you're an Android user, but if Cloudee proves popular enough, perhaps support for other platforms will follow.

So, what exactly is Cloudee anyway? It's a social app that lets you share personal videos with family and friends.

"This new iPhone app lets users upload videos to Cloudee, organize them into collections and share them with their family and close friends," Boxee explains. "During the beta period the service is free, but we will later release a paid version with unlimited video storage in the cloud, which you will be able to access from your Boxee Box and any browser."

Boxee's grand vision is that Cloudee users will tap into their collection of seldom viewed videos that take up space on their mobile device. As you upload them to Cloudee and share them with others, Boxee hopes "you'll experience a serendipitous feeling of re-discovery," or something like that.

Multiple users can share a single collection of videos. In addition, viewers can download videos to their their iPhone before taking off on a cross-country flight, on a train, or any other place that might not have Internet.

Intrigued? If you want an invite, there are two requirements. First, you have to join Facebook, if you're not already a member. Secondly, you have to sign up for the beta by going here.
