Box Gets Aggressive with Box for Windows Phone, Qualcomm Collaboration
It’s a heated competition out there between cloud storage providers; two of the most popular, Dropbox and Box, keep one-upping each other even as they target slightly different demographics, and today Box announced a couple of moves that demonstrate how aggressively it’s trying to secure customers in the mobile enterprise.
Box is betting on the continued growth of Windows Phone by offering an app for the platform that goes beyond simply offering cloud-connected storage and integrates specifically with the Windows Phone OS.
First off, Box for Windows Phone sports a Metro-like interface, and users can pin Live Tiles to their Start screens, launch slideshows like they would in the Pictures Hub, and pivot between files. There’s also the ability to access, view, share, and collaborate on content with other users from anywhere, the ability to search your Box account from your mobile device, bulk file management, and a passcode lock.
Not to ignore Android devices, Box also announced a partnership with Qualcomm that will see Box pre-loaded onto several Android (and Windows Phone) devices powered by the Snapdragon processor. This is actually a nice deal for users, as they’ll get the paid Box OneCloud for Android app for free, although the pre-loaded Box “apps and promotions” might be a bit annoying.
