BlackBerry Considers Restructuring Process Finished, Vows No More Workforce Reductions
In an internal memo to employees, BlackBerry CEO John Chen essentially told the company's remaining workers that they can exhale, the worst is behind them, including layoffs. Not only that, but Chen said he plans to hire workers in specific areas, which is somewhat surprising after BlackBerry just finished shrinking its workforce by around 60 percent over the past three years.
"We have completed the restructuring notification process, and the workforce reduction that began three years ago is now behind us," Chen stated in the memo.
It's been a long and rough road for BlackBerry, the company formerly known as Research In Motion (RIM), which has tried numerous tactics to reinvent itself. No longer the dominant force in mobile that it once was. BlackBerry's share of the market is on the opposite end of the spectrum compared to Apple (iOS) and Google (Android). Even Microsoft's Windows Phone platform managed to skip ahead of BlackBerry.
Chen was brought in eight months ago to change the company's future, and he wasted no time getting rid of non-core assets. Going forward, he still envisions BlackBerry being a force in the smartphone sector, but is more focused on promoting the company's strengths, such as mobile data security and device management. He's also optimistic that BlackBerry will meet its goal of being cash flow positive by the end of the year.
