AT&T Reveals First LTE Devices: Two WWAN Products
AT&T has announced their first LTE products. But, contrary to popular belief, neither product is a phone. To be fair, this is actually fairly straight-forward. The first WiMAX devices that took advantage of Clearwire's services were network adapters, and the first LTE devices for Verizon Wireless were also WWAN devices. So, following traditions, AT&T has announced the USBConnect Momentum 4G and Elevate 4G. The first is a USB WWAN device, and the second is a souped-up WWAN module.
What makes these unique is that they'll support both HSPA+ and LTE. That way, if you scoot outside of a 4G area, both of these will hop over to a 3G network to keep your connection going. The Momentum 4G touts plug-and-play capabilities, while the Elevate 4G offers a 1.77" display and can provide access to up to five Wi-Fi products. The company plans to launch LTE in five cities (Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio) this summer, with up to ten more being added throughout 2011.
The carrier will begin selling the AT&T USBConnect Momentum 4G in black and silver for $49.99 with two-year contract after a $50 mail-in-rebate. The AT&T Mobile Hotspot Elevate 4G will be available in black for $69.99 with 2-year contract and after a $50 mail-in rebate. AT&T expects both devices will be available this summer online and in company-owned retail stores, but they aren't sharing details yet on per-month rate plans. We suspect they'll be tiered, though, and obviously more expensive than 3G prices.
