Apple: No Fragmentation Here, 80 Percent of 365 Million iOS Devices Run iOS 5
Speaking at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) yesterday, Apple senior vice president for iOS, Scott Forstall, dropped some numbers on the crowd. He said Apple has sold 365 million iOS devices through March 30, a staggering number made even impressive by the fact that 80 percent of those devices are running iOS 5. Let that sink in for a moment.
One of the many features included in iOS 6 is the ability to FaceTime over a cellular network, not just Wi-Fi. Meanwhile, Apple claims 80 percent of iOS users are rocking version 5, the latest build currently available.
Just as Android has its benefits as an open source platform, iOS's proprietary path leads to a far less fragmented destination, which is iOS's greatest strength. And in case you're wondering, 75 percent of Apple's customers say they're "very satisfied" with iOS, Forstall claims. Android, meanwhile, is much more scattered, though also far more flexible and customizable. You win some, you lose some.
According to CNet, Forstall also said iOS 5 users are receiving 7 billion push notifications each day, along with a billion iMessage texts. iOS 5 has also been the platform for some 10 billion tweets.
