Angry Birds Maker Doubles Revenue in 2012, Toys Contribute 45 Percent
"Year 2012 was another record-breaking year for Rovio. We doubled our revenue with an EBIT margin of 50 percent, more than doubled our headcount, established new offices and a New Business Ventures unit," said Rovio CFO Herkko Soininen. "Also, to protect our own, as well as our partners’ and our fans’ interests, we continue to invest heavily in brand protection globally."
Rovio launched four major titles in 2012, including Angry Birds Space, Amazing Alex, Bad Piggies, and Angry Birds Star Wars. All told, Rovio dished up more than 1 billion downloads and grew its active monthly userbase to 263 million. Going forward, Rovio expects game downloads to exceed 1.7 billion in 2013.
It wasn't just about digital revenue, however. Rovio's Consumer Products business (read: toys) accounted for 45 percent of the company's total revenue in 2012, up more than three-fold versus 2011.
