Amazon is giving users of the Fire HD 8 and Fire HD 10 the opportunity to repurpose their tablets courtesy of an upcoming software update. Show Mode, which will be available in a software update downloadable on July 2nd, in effect turns Fire HD tablets into a fully functional Alexa-powered Echo Show. That means that they will support hands-free Alexa to do everything from providing you with weather forecasts, to real-time traffic information, to controlling your smart home.

In order to better facilitate this repurposing of the Fire HD 8 and Fire HD 10, Amazon is also launching the Show Mode Charging Dock. The accessory includes a case that attaches to the Fire HD tablet and an adjustable charging stand that can sit on a table or a kitchen counter. With the case attached, the Fire HD can be easily inserted into to the stand -- aligned magnetically -- where it is then wirelessly charged. That way you won't have to worry about plugging/unplugging a microUSB cable when interacting with the dock.

Alternatively, you can by a Fire HD 8 or Fire HD 10 bundled with the Show Mode Charging Dock, which will cost you $109.98 and $189.98 respectively. The individual docks and the bundles will be available starting July 12th

Fire HD 10 Kids Edition

On a slightly related note, Amazon has announced an all-new Fire HD 10 Kid Edition that is available for preorder today. The Fire HD 10 Kids Edition comes with a 10.1-inch Full HD display, a [unidentified] quad-core processor, 32GB of internal storage and a microSD slot (supports up to 256GB). The integrated battery provides up to 10 hours of runtime and as with all Kids Edition tablets, it comes with a rugged case that can stand up to abuse from kiddos.

The Fire HD 10 Kids Edition comes with a year of Amazon FreeTime Unlimited, a two-year worry-free guarantee and is priced at $199.99. It will ship starting July 11th.
