Activision Puts Big Push Behind Skylanders Game Title, Hoping for Holiday Hit

On Sunday at midnight, Activision Blizzard will release “Skylanders: Giants”, the sequel to the successful “Skylanders: Spyro’s Adventures”, and the company is hoping to strike gold with the kid’s game this holiday season. It certainly needs to, as Activision Blizzard has reportedly sunk tens of millions of dollars into the whole package.

The game is delightful to play with elementary school-age kids and features small plastic figurines that you place on a “portal” which “teleports” the characters into the game. If you put more than one character on the portal, you can play additional game modes, including head-to-head competition.


The WoW maker is no stranger to innovative games that rake in the dough, and Activision Blizzard’s Skylander games feature plenty of physical merchandise, such as the aforementioned figurines (which cost about $10-$15 a pop) as well as posters, stickers, and trading cards. Further, the game is available on a number of consoles, including the Xbox 360, PS3, Wii, and Nintendo 3DS, as well as online and for iOS and Amazon’s Kindle Fire. On the mobile versions as least, you can make in-app purchases.

Activision Blizzard had a hit on its hands with the original Skylanders game--reportedly it sold over 30 million little plastic figures--so it’s reasonable to think that the sequel will be just as successful.
