Gigabyte has gone and beefed up the graphics processor in its thin and relatively light Aero 15 gaming laptop. The new Aero 15 X model swaps out the GeForce GTX 1060 with 6GB of GDDR5 memory found in the non-X SKU to a more powerful GeForce GTX 1070 with 8GB of GDDR5 memory. Beyond being a burlier GPU, the new model laptop also boasts NVIDIA's Max-Q technology.Max-Q is the secret sauce to cooking up thinner and lighter laptops for gaming, such as the excellent ASUS ROG Zephyrus GX501 that we reviewed this past summer. The chips that are inserted into Max-Q laptops are selectively binned based on... Read more...
School is back in session in many parts of the country and if you are in need of a relatively affordable and stylish laptop, ASUS may have what you are looking for in the VivoBook E403NA, essentially a tone down version of its higher-end VivaBook models. Starting at $399, the VivoBook E403NA will not break the bank. At the same time, it offers a decent collection of hardware and features, some of which are not normally found in laptops in this price price range. Starting with the outside, the VivoBook E403NA sports a premium feel thanks to its brushed aluminum lid. It also has a thin and light... Read more...
A new feature of NVIDIA's latest GeForce technology for laptops that we weren't able to evaluate until now, is something NVIDIA calls Whisper Mode. Like its recently introduced Max-Q technology that paves the way for thinner and lighter gaming laptops such as the ASUS ROG Zephyrus GX501, Whisper Mode is another type of mobile gaming optimization, except it focuses on noise output with the intrinsic benefit of lower power draw as well. Short and to the point, it is an intelligent framerate pacing technology designed to lower GPU power consumption, utilization, and ultimately fan noise, while... Read more...
Dell made an impression at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas earlier this year with its Latitude 7285, a system it billed as the world's first wireless charging 2-in-1 business convertible. It is arguably the most interesting Latitude laptop to date, and now a little more than six months later, you can order one direct from Dell starting a $1,199, or just under $2,000 if opting for the highest end configuration. We will get to the hardware specs in a moment, but first let us talk about the wireless charging technology that is at play here. The Latitude 7285 uses wireless charging technology... Read more...
ASUS today announced a rather premium thin and light laptop for folks on a budget. It is the VivoBook S510, and with a starting price of just $699, you can view it as a thin and light system for the rest of us. By that we mean it is much more affordable than most premium looking thin and light systems, which can sometimes command $1,500 or more, depending on the configuration. The VivoBook S510 is a 15.6-inch laptop with a waistline that measures a scant 0.7 inches. It is also fairly lightweight for a 15.6-inch notebook, checking in at just 3.3 pounds. And when you flip open the lid, you'll discover... Read more...
Thinner and lighter gaming laptops are on the horizon, though do not mistake that to mean under powered. As we saw with the unveiling of the ASUS ROG Zephyrus, a gaming notebook packing an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080 GPU and Intel Core i7-7700HQ CPU in a chassis measuring just 0.7 inches, gamers can have it all. Following up on that announcement, ASUS has another thin and laptop in store, the ROG Strix GL702ZC. This one is a little bit chunkier at 1.3 inches and heavier at 7 pounds, but for a gaming laptop it is still pretty svelte. It is also rocking AMD hardware inside. "The Strix GL702ZC is practically... Read more...
MSI is one of the biggest players in the gaming laptop market with a wide range of models that cover the spectrum from thin and light notebooks that pack a punch, on up to desktop replacement systems with unbridled power inside. Earlier this week AMD talked about its mobile strategy with regards to Ryzen and said that we can expect a variety of Zen-powered laptops starting in the third quarter of this year. Picking up where AMD left off, ASUS and its Republic of Gamers division posted a teaser video giving us a shadowed look at what will presumably be its first gaming laptop with Ryzen inside. The video is short on details, but big on hype. It shows a laptop with the ROG logo on the lid, with the Ryzen logo serving as the backdrop. As the logo and laptop come into partial view, the words "Something has awakened" get scribbled... Read more...
So apparently Microsoft has begun mass producing its second generation Surface Book, with upstream supply chain players expecting the company to make an announcement by the end of the month or sometime in April. That is not really surprising—Microsoft has several generations of Surface Pro models under its belt, so why not keep the Surface Book line alive? What is somewhat surprising, however, is that Microsoft may opt for a traditional clamshell design rather than stick with the detachable 2-in-1 form factor of the original. It seems that Microsoft wants to create more separation between the Surface... When the theft first occurred, Razer CEO Min-Lian Tan posted a message on Facebook saying that... Read more...
Samsung is no stranger to the laptop category, having served nearly every product category from Chromebooks for education on up to premium thin and light systems for professionals and mainstream users alike. But what about gaming laptops? That has been one the segment to elude Samsung, at least until now. Samsung today unveiled the Odyssey, its first notebook line for gamers There are two versions of the Odyssey, one with a 17.3-inch display with 300 nits brightness and the other with a 15.6-inch panel rated at 280 nits. Microsoft recently made a surprise announcement that it was bringing support for Windows 10 to run natively on Qualcomm's ARM-based Snapdragon processors, paving the way for a full Windows 10 experience on increasingly powerful mobile handsets. The announcement also opened the door to using Snapdragon processors in laptops and tablets running Windows 10 and that is something that device makers are already working towards. Word from the upstream supply chain is that brand vendors have already begun developing and testing laptops and tablets equipped with Snapdragon System-on-Chips (SoCs) and that... Read more...
