While companies left and right have been jumping on the virtual reality bandwagon that was created in large part by the Oculus Rift, one firm has been curiously absent—Apple. That changed yesterday when Apple announced at its annual developer conference (WWDC) an external graphics enclosure that will enable developers to develop and test graphically demanding apps, including VR content. NVIDIA CEO Jen Hsun Huang just delivered a keynote speech at Computex Taipei, during which he unveiled some new mobile technology designed to optimize game performance, in smaller notebook form factors than have been previously possible. NVIDIA calls the technology Max-Q Design, and it enables NVIDIA’s notebook partners to cram high-performance GPUs like the GeForce GTX 1080 into notebooks that are a fraction of the size of previous-gen offerings. Could Google’s Android O possibly go modular? Google’s own Romain Guy, Android Graphics Team Manager just revealed that his team has been working on making it so that device graphics drivers can be updated through the Play Store. The functionality should be ready for select devices by the time Android O is officially released. Android users could potentially update their graphics drivers without having to download and flash a time-consuming system update. When is a confirmation not really a confirmation? The answer: when it originates from a rumor site rather than a company official. In case anyone needed another lessen in this, Intel has broke its silence and is flat out denying rumors that it inked a licensing deal with AMD for its graphics technology. In preparation for the impending launch of AMD's next-generation Vega GPU architecture, which will eventually reside at the top of the company's graphics product stack, AMD is refreshing its mainstream graphics card line-up with some more-powerful Polaris-based offerings. At an AMD 'Tech Summit' held in Beijing this past week, plenty was revealed about the company's upcoming Radeon RX Vega. It's not clear whether anything at this summit was meant to leak out almost immediately, but it included some information AMD hasn't yet mentioned on these shores. For close to two decades, EVGA has been producing graphics cards based on NVIDIA GPU technology. Although GPUs based on the technology are not quite ready to ship, AMD recently briefed us on some of the finer details of its next-generation architecture, codenamed Vega.One of the underlying forces behind Vega’s design is that conventional GPU architectures have not been scaling well for diverse data types. NVIDIA’s Pascal architecture has been wildly successful in the consumer space. The various GPUs that power the GeForce GTX 10 series are all highly competitive at their respective price points, and the higher-end variants are currently unmatched by any single competing GPU. That may change when AMD launches GPUs based on its next-generation Vega architecture, but that won’t happen for a few more months, so cards like the GeForce GTX 1080 and TITAN X will continue to dominate benchmark charts at least for a little while longer.
