When many think of the brightest minds in science to have ever lived, one name that springs forward is Stephen Hawking. The world-renowned author and physicist has passed away at age 76 in his Cambridge home in the early hours of Wednesday morning. Hawking's death was confirmed by his family with the issuing of a statement on his passing. Hawking's children, Lucy, Robert, and Tim, issued the following statement, "We are deeply saddened that our beloved father passed away today. He was a great scientist and an extraordinary man whose work and legacy will live on for many years. His courage and persistence with his brilliance and humor inspired people across the world. Stephen Hawking, one of the brightest minds of all time, believes that artificial intelligence can not only be developed to match the human brain in its ability to solve problems, but exceed it. If used in the right manner, AI has can transform every aspect of our lives and undo the damage to the natural world caused by the industrial revolution, Hawking says. However, there is also the potential for something catastrophic. "Every aspect of our lives will be transformed [by AI]. In short, success in creating effective AI could be the biggest event in the history of our civilization, or the worst. We just don't know," Hawking said during the opening night of Web Summit 2017 in Lison, Portugal.... Read more...
When it comes to science fiction, the idea that artificial intelligence could be the cause of the human race’s extinction is a concept that has been used many times. For example, The Matrix and Terminator franchises depict futures where mankind is dominated, or being driven to extinction, by machines when the AI became self-aware. Now, as companies are creating thinking machines, Professor Stephen Hawking believes that such AI could threaten our existence. When responding to a question about the technology behind how he communicates, which involves a basic form of AI, Professor Hawking answered the question and proceeded to tell the BBC, “The development of full artificial intelligence could... Walk along a road in New York City and, sooner or later, you are bound to see someone holding up a sign that talks about the end of the world. But what if that person is famed physicist Stephen Hawking? In the preface to a new book titled “Starmus,” Hawking talked about his concerns regarding the Higgs particle and the possibility of it destroying our universe. Hawking wrote, "The Higgs potential has the worrisome feature that it might become metastable at energies above 100bn gigaelectronvolts (GeV)." Hawking talked about what would happen if this were to occur saying, “"This could mean that the universe could undergo catastrophic vacuum decay, with a bubble of the true vacuum... Read more...
So, this isn't exactly tech related, but anytime one of the greatest minds of our, or any, generation makes news, I figured you'd want to know.  After almost 30 years in his post a Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at Cambridge University, Stephen Hawking plans to finally step down."Famed cosmologist Stephen Hawking will retire from his prestigious post at Cambridge University next year, but intends to continue his exploration of time and space.Hawking, 66, is Lucasian Professor of Mathematics, a title once held by the great 18th-century physicist Isaac Newton. The university said Friday that he would step down at the end of the academic year in September, but would continue...
