Microsoft released a new preview build of Windows 10 Redstone 2, the second major update to Windows 10 that's currently a work in progress (the first was the Anniversary Update, which was codenamed Redstone 1 prior to its release). It's available to Windows Insiders who are subscribed to the program's Fast ring and it brings with it a handful of updates, including improvements to the Windows subsystem for Linux (WSL) and some nifty Windows Ink Workspace updates.Starting with WSL, there are two large updates to note. It appears that Microsoft has set a launch date for Windows 10 Redstone 2. WalkingCat, the same Twitter user that leaked videos of Microsoft’s newest version of the Paint app, tweeted that Redstone 2 will have the build number 1703. RS2 = Windows 10 Version 1703— WalkingCat (@h0x0d) October 14, 2016 If you know how to decipher Microsoft’s build numbers for release versions of Windows 10, it’s pretty easy to determine when Redstone 2 will drop. Microsoft may be way down with regards to its aspirations in the smartphone market, but don’t count the company out just yet. Windows 10 Mobile hasn’t been the savior that Microsoft hoped would help its smartphone sales rebound, but it isn’t stopping the Redmond, Washington-based company from forging ahead with the Redstone 2 update for Windows 10 Mobile. In fact, Microsoft used its Ignite 2016 conference to highlight some of the features that will be coming to Windows 10 Mobile users. After rolling out the Anniversary Update to Windows 10 last month, Microsoft's been looking ahead to Redstone 2, the codename for one of two more major upgrades Microsoft has planned for next year. Windows Insiders subscribed to receive Fast ring updates had the opportunity to play with a very early Preview build of Redstone 2 in August, and now right around a month later, Microsoft is serving up another one to Fast ring subscribers for both PC and Mobile. Coinciding with the release is the expiration of "really old" Insider Previews, which will start to see build expiration notifications today and everyday until October 1st. Now it's time to look ahead to Redstone 2, one of two major updates Microsoft has planned for next year.
