If there's a universal truth among performance junkies, it's that records are meant to be broken. It doesn't matter if you're talking about the Olympics, racing the quarter-mile in a hotrod, or ripping through Futuremark's 3DMark Vantage benchmark at a breakneck pace, the latter of which overclocker J. Lin demonstrated using four HIS brand... Read more...
Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) doesn't appear terribly concerned with NVIDIA's Kepler architecture at the moment. If you recall, it took some time for AMD to roll out price cuts for its Radeon HD 7000 Series graphics cards after Kepler made its official entrance. But now that there's a dual-Kepler graphics card --... Read more...
Back when the first Kepler cards came out and reviews (including ours) showed the GeForce GTX 680 to be the all-around fastest single-GPU graphics card on the planet, the general consensus was that AMD would have to lower the price of its Radeon HD 7970 series. It didn't make sense to try and continue to sell the 7970 for $550 when gamers... Read more...
There isn't much to fault about AMD's Radeon HD 7970 graphics card. Prior to Kepler, it was the fastest single-GPU graphics card on the market, and post-Kepler it's still a high performing part. It can also run a bit loud, particularly if you roll with a Crossfire configuration. What's an enthusiast to do? Cool it... Read more...
The arrival of Kepler was a double-win for consumers. First, NVIDIA's highly anticipated GeForce GTX 680 graphics card upped the pixel pushing performance ante and took pole position as the fastest single-GPU card on the planet, pulling ahead of AMD's Radeon HD 7970 videocard in almost every situation (check out our review here). And secondly,... Read more...
Contrary to popular belief, lightning can strike twice in the same place. It's certainly struck MSI a number of times, which today announced the release of its R7970 Lightning edition graphics card featuring an all-new 'Unlocked Digital Power Architecture.' What that means is that it sports an unlocked BIOS, a Digital PWM Controller, and an... Read more...
PowerColor on Wednesday announced what it claims is the world's first and only Radeon HD 7970 graphics card with a liquid cooling solution attached. The company's new LCS HD7970 features a pre-installed waterblock provided by EK Waterblocks that has a nickel coated copper base extending over the key components. According to PowerColor, the... The Asus Radeon HD 7970 DirectCU II TOP is a factory overclocked graphics card being pitched as the coolest and quietest 7970 money can buy. It's also the biggest. To keep thermals and noise in check, Asus slapped an ultra-wide cooling solution that, along with the PCB, takes up three three -- yes, THREE -- slots in... Read more...
Goose and Maverick aren't the only ones with a need, a need for speed (that's a Top Gun reference for you young guns out there, not a shout out to EA's Need for Speed series). Apparently AMD isn't content to simply own the fastest single-GPU graphics card on the planet, but it's also flirting with the idea of... Read more...
