By now you've probably heard all about Billy Mitchell, the controversial "King of Kong" that rose to fame thanks to his mastery of the arcade classic Donkey Kong. However, earlier this year there were suspicions raised about cheating through the use of emulators (MAME). In April, Twin Galaxies stripped Mitchell of every single one of his high scores, including the high watermark 1,062,800 run. The retro, classic-gaming scene is never at a shortage for drama, but the past couple of weeks have been especially tumultuous. After seeing Todd Rogers stripped of his Dragster world record and banned from Twin Galaxies, Billy Mitchell found himself the target of cheating allegations of his own. He too has since had many of his high-scores nixed from the Donkey Kong Forum leaderboards. The allegations against Mitchell suggest that the King Of Kong star used direct-feeds from MAME, the Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator -- which can easily be manipulated -- as proof of some of his high scores, in lieu of an actual arcade machine. More drama is unfolding in the ultra-competitive retro arcade gaming scene, and yes, that is a thing. Billy Mitchell, the arcade legend who appeared as a central character opposite Steve Wiebe in the documentary The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters, has been accused of cheating his way into the record books for high scores in Donkey Kong.
