When Google announced it had been the victim of government-sponsored hacking attempts last January, it also declared it would no longer censor search results on Google.cn. Now, the company is at least modifying that position, as it doesn't wish to lose its Internet Content Provider (ICP) license. Back in January, Dave Drummond wrote: We have decided we are no longer willing to continue censoring our results on Google.cn, and so over the next few weeks we will be discussing with the Chinese government the basis on which we could operate an unfiltered search engine within the law, if at all. As promised, Google stopped filtering Chinese search results on Monday; users attempting to visit Google.cn are now redirected to Google.hk. That's the company's Hong Kong domain, which is not censored to comply with China's demands. The next move in the ongoing saga is China's; Google's decision to redirect mainland Chinese users to a different search portal will not guarantee those users' access if China decides to shut Google down locally or blocks access to the site itself.
