Verizon Wireless Reveals Pantech UML290 Launch Date

Yesterday, we told you about Verizon Wireless' plans to launch its 4G LTE network. Initially, it appeared the LG VL600 modem may be the only model available at launch. Now, it's clear the Pantech UML290 will also be available on Sunday, Dec. 5. This 4G USB modem supports both 4G and 3G speeds and offers a rotating USB connector that folds away when not in use.

Other key features include:

    • 4G LTE – customers can expect download speeds of  5 to 12 Mbps and upload speeds of 2 to 5 Mbps in 4G Mobile Broadband coverage area
    • 3G – customers can expect download speeds of 600 Kbps to 1.4 Mbps and upload speeds of 500 to 800 Kbps in Mobile Broadband coverage area
  • 180 degree rotating USB connector folds away when not in use
  • Supports Windows® XP 32-bit, Vista™ 32/64-bit (SP2) and Windows 7 32/64-bit
  • Connects to corporate applications, e-mail, instant messaging and the Internet
  • Efficient, innovative internal antenna design optimizes data transfer rate and sensitivity to network signals

Like many smartphones and modems, the UML290 will be available with discounts, provided you sign a new customer agreement and submit a mail-in rebate. More specifically, you should be able to pick up the UML290 for $99.99 after a $50 mail-in rebate and a new two-year customer agreement on a 4G Mobile Broadband Plan.

As you may recall, Verizon Wireless claims 4G will deliver speeds that are about 10x faster than 3G. In the real-world, Verizon Wireless expects LTE average data rates to be 5 to 12 Mbps on the downlink and 2 to 5 Mbps on the uplink.
