TMobile Drop Kicks Current Sidekicks from Smartphone Lineup
Text messaging teens who don't already own an iPhone are headed for tough times in the trendy smartphone market. First we find out that Microsoft's Kin phones aren't selling as well as the software juggernaut had hoped, leaving questions as to the future of the Kin One and Kin Two, and now we're learning that T-Mobile has kicked its Sidekick smartphone to the curb.
"As T-Mobile looks to further innovate and raise the bar for the next generation of the T-Mobile Sidekick, as of July 2, the Sidekick LX and Sidekick 2008 will no longer be available through T-Mobile, including retail stores, care, telesales, and online," the wireless company said in a statement.
If you're an existing Sidekick customer, no need to fret - T-Mobile says they'll continue to support the device. But is this really the end of the road for the Sidekick brand? Maybe not, as T-Mobile hinted at more products to come.
"Stay tuned for exciting updates in the months ahead, which we expect will provide customers with a new and fresh experience," T-Mobile said.
While nothing is official, Internet rumblings suggest T-Mobile is possibly working on an Android-based Sidekick, which would make sense given the rabid popularity of both the Sidekick brand/hardware and Google's Android platform.
