Tesla Kicks Off Online Sales For Certified Pre-Owned Model S EVs, Throws In 4-Year Warranty

Tesla is growing up right before our eyes. The startup that continues to shake up the automotive industry with its lineup of electric vehicles that can only be ordered online is now selling pre-owned Model S cars on its website. Pricing depends on the year, miles, and exact configuration, though each pre-owned vehicle is backed by an extended 4-year, 50,000 mile limited warranty.

This is an important step for a number of reasons. For one, it helps legitimize Telsa as more than just a risky startup, especially since the company doesn't sell its vehicles through dealerships. And secondly, it lowers the cost of entry, which will potentially bring in more customers. Even at used prices, however, many may still find these vehicles to be cost prohibitive.

Tesla Model S Used

Currently the least expensive used model on Tesla's website is the 2013 85 kWh Model S with 13,036 miles. The asking price is $65,150, plus a potential $1,500 transportation fee if shipping the electric car to a Tesla service center that's close to you.

On the other end of the pricing spectrum, the most expensive used Model S is a 2014 P85+ with 5,828 miles. It's going for $96,750, compared to $105,000 for a brand new P85D.

The ones that are up for sale are mostly models that were traded in for the all-wheel drive version of the Model S released last year. The lineup will also be fleshed out with leased vehicles that were sold in the middle of 2012.
