Stupid iPhone Thief Takes Selfies, Gets Identified By Owner’s Facebook Friends And Authorities
No one likes a thief, but it's somehow better to hear about one that's as dumb as a doorknob. I'm talking the sort of thief that doesn't know when to call it quits, and ends up doing something foolish that eventually leads to their arrest.
While that conclusion hasn't been reached quite yet for an iPhone thief in Denver, it's bound to happen at some point thanks to her missteps.
Rawley Bingham had her iPhone stolen from her by a pickpocket at a bar on Friday, and as the weekend went on, she settled on the fact that it was gone for good. She got some hope the next time she logged into Facebook, though, when she discovered that the thief had been a selfie-addict and uploaded many pictures to a private folder.
The thief didn't stop there. She began responding to Bingham's friends on Facebook acting like her, and even told one friend that she'd pick them up at the airport, but never did. It seems like this thief wasn't just content on stealing a phone, but wanted to have a bit of fun at the same time.
Here's where things become really brazen: Denver's police called the phone, and the thief said she'd return it. Of course, she didn't. We're in a limbo right now, until someone can identify the thief via a number of her pictures (such as the one above.)
What I find most interesting about this story is that it seems very likely this thief will be caught because her face is now plastered everywhere - something that wouldn't have happened if the phone was pin-locked and encrypted. At that point, the thief would have had a bunk phone, or been able to force a reset and claim it as her own, potentially going undiscovered.
Regardless of that, we can relish the fact that it's just a matter of time before this thief is caught, especially since she seems so intent on being seen.
