Sony Says Sorry for PlayStation Store Grand Theft Auto V Leak, Game Reported Gone Gold
Sometimes when you screw up, all you can do is apologize and hope for the best. So it is with Sony, which issued an open apology to Rockstar Games and gamers around the world for a leak of Grand Theft Auto V assets, including details about the highly anticipated game's theme, soundtrack, and other spoilers.
To be fair, it wasn't entirely Sony's fault. The leak actually came from a subset of gamers/hackers who downloaded the digital pre-order of GTA V through the PlayStation Store in Europe and partially cracked the encrypted files. They were able to extract cut-scene audio, revealing spoilers about the game.
"We sincerely apologize to Rockstar and GTA fans across the world who were exposed to the spoiler content," Sony stated in a blog post. "GTA V is one of the most highly anticipated games of the year with a very passionate following, and we’re looking forward to a historic launch on September 17."
Sony has since removed the ability to download pre-ordered copies of GTA V prior to its release, though the damage has already been done. Having been apprised of the situation, Rockstar Games let it be known that it was disappointed.
"Unfortunately, as many of you may already know, some people who downloaded the digital pre-order of Grand Theft Auto V through the PlayStation Store in Europe were able to access certain GTA V assets leading to leaked information and media from the game appearing online. Rockstar Games has been slowly releasing additional info, trailers, screenshots, and more in relation to GTA V leading up to its release. The game has gone gold and will launch to PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 next month. There's still no word on when it will be available for PC.
