Security Firm AV-Test Publishes Ratings For 26 Windows 8 Anti-Virus Solutions

One of the reasons to considering upgrading to Windows 8 is the improved security Microsoft baked into its latest operating system. This is especially true if you pair the touch-friendly OS with an antivirus or Internet security suite program, a point that's underscored by the latest results published by, an independent testing firm located in Germany.

For the first time, AV-Test examined antivirus protection in Windows 8, testing more than two dozen programs, including Microsoft's built-in Windows Defender 4.0 engine. Remarkably, all 26 programs put under the microscope were awarded the AV-Test certificate when used with Windows 8.

BitDefender Internet Security 2013

That doesn't mean all AV programs performed the same. AV-Test breaks down its testing into three categories: Protection, Performance, and Usability. BitDefender Internet Security 13, a paid program, stood out by scoring top marks in all three categories, including 6/6 rankings in Protection and Usability. It caught 98 percent of AV-Test's 125 zero-day malware samples in January and 100 percent in February, besting the industry average of 95 percent.

AVG Free Edition 2013

On the freebie side, AVG Free Edition 2013 performed exceptionally well, scoring 5.5/6 in both Protection and Usability, and 4.5/6 in Performance.
