Security Firm AV-Test Publishes Ratings For 26 Windows 8 Anti-Virus Solutions
For the first time, AV-Test examined antivirus protection in Windows 8, testing more than two dozen programs, including Microsoft's built-in Windows Defender 4.0 engine. Remarkably, all 26 programs put under the microscope were awarded the AV-Test certificate when used with Windows 8.
That doesn't mean all AV programs performed the same. AV-Test breaks down its testing into three categories: Protection, Performance, and Usability. BitDefender Internet Security 13, a paid program, stood out by scoring top marks in all three categories, including 6/6 rankings in Protection and Usability. It caught 98 percent of AV-Test's 125 zero-day malware samples in January and 100 percent in February, besting the industry average of 95 percent.
On the freebie side, AVG Free Edition 2013 performed exceptionally well, scoring 5.5/6 in both Protection and Usability, and 4.5/6 in Performance.
