If you remember Project Larrabee, don't forget to take ibuprofen for your sore back and aching joints (a reminder for myself as much as anyone else). Project Larrabee was actually an earlier attempt by Intel to challenge AMD, which was somewhat fresh off its ATI acquisition, and NVIDIA in the discrete graphics card space, though Intel would ultimately pivot to the HPC market and eventually cancel Larrabee altogether, leaving whatever prototype cards still in the wild as collector's items. One of them recently turned up, and it still works. Heck, it even supposedly runs Crysis!
While a distant memory at this point, Intel poured years of engineering effort into developing a GPU that never reached consumers, leaving behind a handful of rare prototypes and questions about how it might have performed. An unlikely discovery by Reddit user pkellythompson is not likely to answer the question outright, though it could help fill in some of the blanks, thanks to the Larrabee prototype surviving into 2026.
That's arguably the most exciting part of the find. While Larrabee engineering samples have surfaced before, getting one to do much of anything has been another matter. That was also case with this recent find, at least initially.
"Found this old dusty blue box PC in storage unit content bought at an auction...
Based on some research on the motherboard model and all, system inside looks like some kinda older intel PC of some sort (motherboard model tag says intel DX58S0).
System won't boot or display anything when plugged into an HDMI monitor," the user wrote on Reddit.
The initial post surfaced a few weeks ago. Scrolling through the comments, however, takes you on a geeky thrill ride whereby pkellythompson said they enlisted the help of a "nerdy friend" with over 20 years of experience working on computers, who ultimately managed to get the prototype card to boot in Windows 7 with Direct3D graphics acceleration enabled.

From there, they shared results of the development kit running Crysis at 1280x720 with Medium settings. Screenshots posted to Imgur suggest it got up to 36 frames per second. That's not enough to have challenged flagships of the period, like NVIDIA's GeForce GTX 285 or AMD's Radeon HD 5870 back in early to late 2009, but not too shabby considering how demanding the game was for its time, as well as the fact that Larrabee never ended up shipping to consumers.
Performance is not the point, though. Intel abandoned Larrabee before it could become something worthwhile for consumers, and eventually re-entered the discrete GPU scene with Arc. The real score here is stumbling onto a piece of history and seeing a Larrabee dev kit not only boot into Windows 7, but render actual 3D gameplay at all. Bit hat-tip to pkellythompson for the amazing find and sharing it on Reddit.
