Porsche EV Gets EPA Rated For Only 201 Miles, Were All The Good Batteries Taycan?

Porsche has been hyping up its EV called the Taycan for a while. Many already thought Porsche was questionable on the EV front since the Taycan Turbo/Turbo S doesn't even have a turbo. Many have also made fun of the name of the Porsche EV; we suspect all the good names were...Taycan. Silly name aside, the most embarrassing thing the Porsche Taycan has had to endure was handed down by the EPA in the form of an official  range estimate.

The EPA has given the Taycan Turbo a range estimate of only 201 miles. Porsche had estimated the base version would go 280 miles per charge. Where does that rank the Taycan Turbo compared to other EVs on the market? The range leader is the Tesla Model S Long Range at 373 miles; the Model S Performance is good for 348 miles. The Ford Mustang Mach-E can travel 300 miles per charge. Porsche's fancy EV has less driving range than the Chevy Bolt, Nissan Leaf, Audi E-Tron, and even the Jaguar I-Pace.

The real kick in the diffs for Porsche is that all of those cars — with the exception of the Teslas — have smaller battery packs than the 93.4 kWh unit Porsche uses. The range estimate is so bad that Porsche has already shelled out for independent testing with AMCI. In simulated real-world environments, it came up with a 275-mile range, still vastly under what Tesla can deliver.

Porsche can have whoever it wants test driving range, but the 201-mile EPA estimate is what has to go on the window sticker. Perhaps Porsche buyers will simply overlook the poor range and buy the car for its impressive performance credentials.
