Polaroid Makes A Comeback: New One Step Cameras Coming Next Year

Remember 'How Stella Got Her Groove Back?' We're not saying this comeback is anywhere near that monumental, but Polaroid is a pretty huge brand in the grand scheme of things. It's an icon in the consumer electronics/digital imaging industry, and while it certainly peaked years ago, there's nothing like a second wind to get consumers buzzing again. After filing for Chapter 11 and being picked up by Summit Global Group, it seems the company is itching to return the brand to its rightful place atop the throne. Granted, competition is a lot tougher today and consumer desires are vastly different, but hey, if Apple can go from near-dead to nearly unstoppable, why not these guys?

In an announced made this week in Hong Kong, Summit Global is looking to take advantage of its 5-year license agreement for use of the Polaroid Brand by introducing a few new products in 2010, and yes, vintage/retro lovers should take notice. For starters, that film-based one-touch camera that made the company famous (you know, "shake it like a Polaroid picture") is getting a refresh, and the One Step Camera will still rely on actual film. If all goes well, the cam should hit the market in mid-2010, with color and black-and-white film available.

Also, Summit Global stated that a Polaroid TWO model would also land next year, describing it as the "digital version of the traditional camera that produces instant digital photos." We're pretty attached to our DSLRs at this point, but we can't help but be excited about this. If for nothing more than novelty's sake, we'll be thrilled to see new Polaroid cameras on the shelves. They always said history repeated itself, right?
