Palm Pre, Pixi Fire Sale Follows HP-Palm Merger
Like a caped avenger, Hewlett-Packard (HP) last week swooped in and scooped up Palm, saving the day for the struggling smartphone maker who, up to that point, was faced with an uncertain future. In the wake of the acquisition, Verizon has gone and slashed the price of Palm's HP's two webOS smartphones, the Palm Pre and Pixi.
These aren't minor price cuts either, but fairly significant ones. The Palm Pre Plus is now selling for just $29 with a 2-year contract, which is $120 less than the original price just four short months ago. That's a pittance to pay for a high-end device with 16GB of storage, 3G capabilities, slide out keyboard, and touchscreen display, among other goodies.
If you'd rather, the Palm Pixi Plus is also selling for $29 with a two-year contract, but it gets even better. Verizon is offering a buy one, get one free deal for the both the Pre Plus and Pixi Plus, while Sprint has begun giving away the Palm Pixi, also with a two-year deal.
The massive discounts may seem sudden, but they make sense given that Palm's Pre series have largely been overshadowed by the deluge of Android devices popping up. At these price points, however, the Pre Plus and Pixi may find themselves back in the limelight.
