Nintendo Delays 3DS Launch Until Next Year For All Markets
Here's what you don't want to do if you're running a major video game
company that's publicly owned: delay a major console. Back in June,
Nintendo revealed that the 3D version of their DS handheld was real, and
while it would not ship in the U.S. until early 2011, Japanese gamers
would be able to enjoy it this year. Now, that's being pushed back. The
company has come forward with an official product delay, meaning that
the 3DS will not be on sale in any market, Japan or otherwise, for the
huge holiday season.
Adding insult to injury, it was announced that the 3DS will cost ¥25,000, which is pushing $300. That's easily Nintendo's most expensive handheld ever, and it's a full $100 more than a Wii at-home console! Thankfully, no 3D glasses (an additional cost, usually) will be required for viewing the special display, but that's still a lot to ask of DS owners who may have just purchased their DS XL or DSi a few months ago. The new release date for Japan is February 26, 2011, while it will launch in Europe, Australia and the U.S. in March.
