Nintendo Switch 64GB Game Cards Allegedly Delayed Until 2019
A new report is making the rounds that claims Nintendo has given some bad news to developers out there working on Switch games that require more space than what's available on today's cards (32GB max). According to the report, Nintendo has told developers that the 64GB game cards for the Switch that were expected by mid-2018 will be delayed until 2019.
Nintendo allegedly cited unknown technical issues with the 64GB game cards that would delay the roll out. The problem for game developers working on titles that need that extra storage space is that any scheduled for roll out in 2018 that would have required 64GB physical media won’t happen. This will likely result in delayed game launches, at least on physical media.
Presumably, larger games that won't fit on the available game cards could still be sold as downloadable titles. The catch is that Switch owners would need a very large SD card to hold a few games.
Nintendo noted a few weeks ago that it had sold 10 million Switch consoles in the first nine months of availability. Nintendo was also responsible for much of the overall growth in the gaming industry overall with 19% gains reported in November, with much of that gain thanks to the Switch and the SNES Classic Edition consoles.
Nintendo continues to struggle to meet demand for the Switch, but supply has improved. Last month Nintendo's Reggie Fils-Aime said, "As you can see in people’s living rooms, on a plane or riding the subway, fans all over the world can enjoy playing Nintendo Switch wherever they go. The response from fans has been great, and we’re doing our very best to satisfy demand during the holiday shopping season."
