Modular LG G5 Arrives Stateside In April With Free Charging Cradle And Extra Battery
You'll be able to find the G5 at major carriers and retailers, including AT&T, Best Buy, Best Buy Mobile, B&H, Sprint, T-Mobile, U.S. Cellular, and Verizon. What's unique about the G5 is that its modular design allows it to plug into a host of companion devices that LG calls "LG Friends." Depending on the companion device, you can turn the G5 into a DSLR style camera, mobile virtual reality viewer, and more.
"You only have to wait a few weeks to get your hands on the LG G5. It's clear from the consumer polls being conducted by the media that people are incredibly excited about the phone and we're very proud of the practical innovations in the G5 and Friends as well," said Morris Lee, LG Electronics MobileComm's senior vice president and head of North American sales and marketing. "The rave responses to the LG G5 from the press and the industry are proof that the smartphone is exciting again and it is obvious that the LG G5 is well worth waiting for."
That sounds like marketing hype, and while some of it is, one thing worth noting is that the G5 won Best New Smartphone at the 2016 Mobile World Congress last month. It's a neat concept, provided the companion devices hold up on their end of the bargain. If they're anything less than awesome, this could end up being a forgettable release.
The G5 itself sports a sleek aluminum body with the ability to swap out an empty battery for a fully charged one in a matter of seconds. LG is so proud of that ability that it's giving away an extra battery and battery charging cradle to customers who purchase the G5.
Other features include a 5.3-inch QHD display with an Always On mode, Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 processor, 4GB of RAM, 32GB of internal storage + microSD card slot, 8MP front camera, 16MP and 8MP rear cameras, fingerprint scanner, USB-C connectivity, and Android 6.0 Marshmallow.
