Maingear Expands Super Stock Options with New Intel Chips

There was some concern early on that Intel's upcoming second generation Core processors would prove to be poor overclockers, but if that's the case, boutique system vendor Maingear certainly didn't get the memo. Instead, the OEM today announced the expansion of its "Super Stock" options to all desktops with an overclocked next-gen CPU up to 5GHz.

Maingear's Shift, F131, Vybe, and X-Cube are all being upgraded with Intel's second-generation Core processors, which as you know by now integrates the GPU onto the CPU, as well as the memory controller and PCI-Express.


Utilizing Turbo Boost Technology 2.0, Maingear says it will be able to goose clockspeeds up to 5GHz on select systems. What does that mean for performance? According to Maingear, its own testing of an Intel Core i7 2600K clocked at 4.8GHz compared to a stock Intel Core i7 at 3.4GHz with Turbo Boost enabled yielded 37 percent faster 3D rendering, 36 percent quicker CPU video encoding, and a 24 percent bump in overall system performance.
