Let the iPhone 5 Rumors Begin

The long anticipated Verizon iPhone 4 launch took place less than a week ago, but already the Web is littered with iPhone 5 rumors. Good thing too, that is if you happen to agree with Consumer Reports that the current model is now a "middle-aged" device. Let's break down what you can expect.

One of the rumors floating around is that the iPhone 5 will sport a 4-inch screen. By comparison, most Android smartphones rock 4-inch and larger screens, so we wouldn't be surprised one bit if this one came true. Harder to predict is exactly what kind of display Apple will go with. A Korean news outlet reports Samsung is in talks with Apple to supply Super Plane to Line Switching (PLS) displays for use in the next generation iPhone. These are said to offer better viewing angles than IPS panels and are cheaper to boot.

Another rumor suggests the iPhone 5 will sport a snazzy 1GHz dual-core processor. At least one source says this will be a next-generation ARM Cortex-A9 based A5 processor produced by TSMC. This would replace the A4, and in our opinion is going to be essential in order to keep up with the next generation of smartphones. We've heard similar rumblings about the iPad 2, so we also rate this one high on the probability scale.
