Lenovo Powers New ThinkPad Notebooks With Intel Skylake Xeon Processors
“We’ve built features into these machines that were previously unachievable in a notebook, making them the most versatile and highest-performing mobile workstations ever,” said Lenovo vice president and general manager for workstations, Victor Rios in a statement.
As we reported last week, Intel’s new Xeon processors are finally coming to mobile workstations in the form of the Xeon E3-1500M v5 CPU, which features Intel’s 14nm Skylake architecture. Intel has been quiet about certain specifications for the new processor, but Thunderbolt 3 and Intel vPro Technology are on the list. As a result, the ThinkPad P70 workstation will feature two Intel Thunderbolt 3 ports, which USB Type C ports that offer transfer speeds as high as 10Gbps.
The two laptops include Nvidia Quadro GPUs for heavy-duty content creation power. They also feature 4K resolution displays at come with X-Rite Pantone color calibration. The ThinkPad P50 features a 15.6-inch display, while the P70 is a 17-inch laptop. The P70 will feature 64GB of DDR4 ECC memory (due to the Xeon processor) and up to 1TB of SSD storage, depending on what you need. Lenovo is introducing its FLEX Performance Cooling system with the ThinkPad P line. The dual-fan cooler is designed to be a quieter, better-performing system.
Both of the P Series’ introductory models have starting prices below $2,000, with the P50 ringing in at $1,599 and the P70 starting at $1,999. The laptops will be available in Q4 2015.
