HTC ‘Volantis’ Could Be The New Google Nexus 9 Powered By NVIDIA Tegra K1
Google hasn't been bashful about tapping into various manufacturers to build Nexus-brand devices, and if you've been listening to the chatter coming out of the rumor mill, you may have heard that HTC's been working on a bigger size tablet to serve as the forthcoming "Nexus 9." Some recently leaked specs and photos would suggest that this is true.
According to the folks at Android Police, the Nexus 9 -- otherwise known by its codename, HTC Volantis -- rocks an 8.9-inch display with a 2048x1440 resolution (281 pixels per inch) powered by NVIDIA's mighty 64-bit Tegra K1 System-on-Chip (Soc) and 2GB of RAM.
It also sports 16GB or 32GB of internal storage, 8-megapixel rear-facing camera with optical image stabilization, 3-megapixel front-facing camera, and front-facing stereo speakers. All this comes wrapped in an aluminum chassis with zero-gap construction.
The Volantis isn't quite as light or thin as either the Nexus 7 or Samsung's new Galaxy Tab S 8.4. It measures 8.91 inches by 5.98 inches by 0.31 inches and weighs 418 grams (or 427 grams with LTE). Meanwhile, the smaller Nexus 7 is 0.34 inches thick and weighs 290 grams (299 grams with LTE), while the Galaxy Tab S 8.4 is 0.26 inches thick and weighs 298 grams.
Will these specs hold up to the actual release? Android Police seems to think so, saying that it's "confident" in the information it's heard about Volantis from "multiple sources." As it stands, those sources say the tablet will debut at $399 for the 16GB and $499 for the 32GB. LTE models will carry a premium.
We should know more later this week as Google I/O gets underway (June 25-26).
