Hands-On Dell’s Coffee Lake-H Powered G-Series Gaming Laptops At PAX

Dell G3 17 Gaming Laptop
Last week, Intel unleashed a flood of new 8th generation "Coffee Lake" Core processors for both desktop and notebook systems. We gave you a brief overview of Dell's new gaming-centric notebooks, which have since dropped their Inspiron branding. The new G-Series notebooks are represented by the G3, G5 and G7.

Luckily, we were able to get some hands-on time with the new gaming notebooks at PAX East, and we must say that they are quite fetching machines in person with plenty of high-powered hardware to back them up. All of the machines are available with up to NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1060 graphics cards with Max-Q technology incorporated for smooth gameplay, which is something that all gamers can appreciate when on-the-go.

The G3 is available with either a 15-inch or 17-inch display, both with resolutions of 1920x1080. On the processor front, you'll find either a quad-core Core i5-8300HQ or a hexa-core Core i7-8750HQ that can be paired with up to 32GB of DDR4-2666 memory. Base systems come with a GeForce GTX 1050, while you can upgrade to a GeForce GTX 1050 Ti or GeForce GTX 1060 with Max-Q Design. Up to a 512GB PCIe SSD can be installed and you'll find 802.11ac Wi-Fi paired with Bluetooth 5.0. The G3 is offered in Licorice Black, Recon Blue or Alpine White for the 15-inch model, while the 17-inch model is available in Licorice Black or Recon Blue.

Here's a quick guided tour of all the models...

The G5 is only available with a 15-inch display (1920x1080 standard), but it has the option for a UHD (3840x2160) display if you pony up the extra money. Like the G3 series, Core i5-8300HQ and Core i7-8750HQ processors are offered, and graphics options include the GeForce GTX 1050, GeForce GTX 1050 Ti and GeForce GTX 1060 with Max-Q Design. SSD options once again top out with a 512GB PCIe SSD, while wireless options include 802.11ac Wi-Fi with Bluetooth 4.2 (which is downgrade compared to the G3 family). As for color options, you have your choice of Matte Black or Beijing Red.

Finally, there is the G7 (which is pictured in this article), which adds a third processor option to the mix: the top of the line (and unlocked) Core i9-8950HQ. Display and GPU options are the same as the G5, as are the 802.11ac/Bluetooth 4.2 wireless options and support for up to a 512GB PCIe SSD. The G7 15 is available in either Licorice Black or Alpine White (both pictured).

The Dell G3 15 and G3 17 start at $749 and $799 respectively, while the G5 15 and G7 15 are priced from $799 and $849 respectively. The systems will be available to order starting April 16th.
